Keeping Portland Weird: Urban Iditarod

Interior design is what I love the write about the most - but here and there I like to sprinkle in little tidbits about my life. I hope y'all don't mind!

This weekend is the Portland Urban Iditarod. Quite easily the most fun event I've ever been to in my entire life. (Child birth was great and all but...)

I snagged this description of the event from their website:

"In the Alaskan Iditarod, more than sixty dog sled teams race across the frozen tundra from Anchorage to Nome. In our urban version, teams of 'dogs' lead by a musher will pull their sleds (shopping carts) through some of Portland's most scenic areas. These teams of barking humans must negotiate through the unrelenting and unforgiving dangers of Portland's urban frontier. As an incentive to run, dogs and mushers alike will have several 'rest stops' to replenish lost fluids and discuss tales of mayhem. The course is over four miles, so dogs and mushers alike need to be ready and able to run their tails off."

So in a nutshell, you steal a shopping cart and run around the streets of Portland dressed in a team theme drinking beer all the while. Seriously, do a google image search and you will die laughing. It's hilarious. It's chaos. It's so totally Portland.

Last year our theme was My Little Pony. People peed their pants over it! Here I am in the white, 15 months pregnant I might add (notice I'm the only one not drinking):

This year our theme is "Put a Bird on it" so ya know, we're a bunch of birds. I'm not going to lie, I wasn't as excited about this year's costumes, but they are turning out to be pretty adorable. We're sticking with the one solid color look so the pictures will be as fun and bright as last year. I can't wait to show you! Stay tuned for pictures...

Guest Post: Colorful Chairs

A very special thanks and warm welcome to Mari, from Design Shuffle! As my very first guest writer, I am honored and excited to share this fun post with you!

Hello, everyone! It's Mari, a writer from Design Shuffle, a terrific social networking site for interior designers, professionals and design enthusiasts. With thousands of photos to look through each day, this website is your one-stop shop for interior design inspiration! I love my job because I get to visit lovely blogs like The Garden Edlen as guest blogger.

Today's post is about one of my favorite topics--colorful chairs. Chairs come in every imaginable style, size, shape, texture and color. They can instantly bring a room to life. With so many amazing choices, it was difficult, but finally managed to pick eight chairs to share with you. Please enjoy!

Colorful Chairs

What a lovely display of colorful Tolix chairs in an otherwise white kitchen. Because they're metal, these French chairs are much at home in an outdoor space as they are in the kitchen.

Colorful Chairs

Every single time I see a Panton S Chair, my heart skips a beat. Yes, I do love it that much. This chair has it all√≥sleek design, flowing curves and lots of color choices like the yellow seen here.

Colorful Chairs

Splashed with orange, pink, berry and green, this contemporary upholstered armless chair would fit perfectly into a neutral gray space that needs just pop of color.

Colorful Chairs

A post about colorful chairs would seem incomplete without a deep pink design. Make that a hot pink Egg chair and you have colorful modern chair perfection.

Colorful Chairs

These beautiful slipper chairs covered in a turquoise Ikat are simply stunning right where they sit in this contemporary bedroom design.

Colorful Chairs

Looking for dining room design ideas? These stylish blue tufted-back dining chairs prove that colorful chairs don't have to be "in your face" bright. I love the metal on the chair back and in the nail head trim.

Colorful Chairs

Soft golden yellow velvet makes this the perfect desk chair for a feminine office. What a great melding of functional comfort and stylish beauty.

Colorful Chairs

Another Mid-Century modern chair design, the Swan chair is lovely dressed in a brilliant purple hue. Think of the colorful decorating ideas that could be pulled from that beautiful rug.

Bold colored chairs give your room just right amount of pop! Be sure to check out Design Shuffle. It's full of fantastic inspiration from San Diego interior designers, Chicago interior designers and many others!

iPhone Wallpaper from Pinterest

I love love LOVE Pinterest. I remember when my husband first showed it to me (before everyone knew about it, because he's just that cool!) and I thought, why the heck would I want to spend my day looking at puppies and knitted baby hats? Well obviously I didn't get it at first.

Now I love to look through Pinterest for art inspiration (someday I'm going to bust out the paints again) and along the way I noticed that I would come across really awesome graphics that would be perfect as iPhone wallpaper.

So I've put together a mini collection for you, if you'd like to see everything I've pinned, check out my board on Pinterest.

All images via Pinterest

To save an image as your wallpaper, tap and hold the image until the menu screen pops up, and tap 'Save Image'.

Then go to your photos, select the image you want and tap the boxed arrow in the bottom left of your screen. Tap 'Use as Wallpaper' and voila!

So what do you think? Do you have any favorite images from Pinterest that you never thought to use as wallpaper before?

Cateyes and Color Blocking

Last weekend was one of the first times since having a baby that I've felt somewhat like myself. Losing all those extra lbs has definitely helped, so to celebrate and bring out my confidence I asked my husband if he would take some pictures for me.

And being the dear, sweet, patient husband that he is, he obliged. It was a lot of fun spending the day with him as my personal paparazzi - maybe not as much fun for him though...

Anyhow, here's a few great shots from the day

Thank you, Matt! You are the sweetest husband in the whole entire United States!

ps... since a few people have asked,

you can find the shoes I'm wearing here for $19.99

Playing with Polyvore

I've been meaning to try out Polyvore for a while now - so I went out on a limb and gave it a shot. Polyvore is a fun site where you can put together inspiration boards of clothing, furniture or art. I was a little scared to try it, but it turned out to be WAY easier than I thought!

Since I was putting together a dream board, I pulled out all the stops - no budget - just fabulosity. If you want to tease yourself with AMAZING furniture that is slightly pricey, take a peak over at Zinc Door. To save you a little time, I found 5 incredible side tables. Yummy...

Fabulous Side Tables

I love gold furniture - there's something so regal about it. And if there's anything I love more than gold it's marble, it's so beautiful and luxurious on these side tables.

Side tables are absolutely perfect for displaying tchotchkes and holding your drinks. They are sort of like the bracelet to an outfit - they should always be beautiful and never boring.

What do you think of these side tables? Have you ever used Polyvore?

Sunday Funday

I just LOVE the weekend - I finally get to spend some time with my husband and I get a little extra baby help as an added bonus. This means that I get a few extra moments to put myself together, so I've been trying to dress up a little more lately. You know, wear real pants. Not my Tualatin High School class of '03 sweatpants.

We had a fun little day today. We read stories, took naps - and most importantly - Jack ate "solid" food for the first time! It was pretty hilarious...

I promise, he didn't hate it as much as these pictures make it seem.

We had a lovely little lunch. I'm currently doing the most ridiculous diet in existence in which I can only eat protein on certain days - so it's been pretty funny whenever mealtime rolls around. Matt will say something like, "So, my little carnivore, what kind of MEAT should we feed you today?". The boys had a good time, regardless.

We also made a pit stop at Home Depot. I forced Matt to take a picture of me because I thought it was quite comical going to Home Depot in wedges - and you can see by the quality of it that he wanted to get inside as quickly as possible. Something about it "being cold"... yeah right honey, I know you just couldn't wait to be around all that manly construction stuff.

So all in all, a pretty nice little weekend.  Obviously I don't require much. How bout you, what are the simple little things you love to do on the weekend?

Edlen Family Follies

My husband is quite the talented photographer - and I've been playing around with apps on my iPhone lately - so I decided today would be a fun day to go out and take a few pictures.

I don't have any photos from his fancy camera uploaded yet, but with the magic of iCloud I already have some fun shots to share!

Here's a little sneak peak of my outfit and a few cute ones of the hubs and bubs

Jack Attack!

Baby Jack is approaching the 6 month mark (what the WHAT?!) and I'll be darned he gets cuter every single day. Because of this, it would be absolutely reckless of me not to share his royal handsomeness with the world - so keep your eyes peeled for weekly updates!

ps... for some reason my husband hates when people call him "Baby Jack" he claims it's already obvious that he's a baby. Sorry dearest, but I love it!

Anyway, here's some more BABY JACK!

Small Spaces: Desk with a view

As a busy new mom I don't have time to keep my entire house clean all at once - so I thought it would be best to feature one small piece of my house at a time. This week I'm showing off my desk with a view!

We live in a beautiful building in the South Waterfront of Portland: Atwater Place. As you can see, we are blessed with A LOT of windows.

Image via Hoffman Construction
But this blessing also comes with a challenge - where do you place your furniture if not against the walls? I love this challenge, because I firmly believe furniture should never touch the walls, that's what art is for!

Living in just under 1,600 square feet, we have to make use of every nook and cranny we can. We needed a place for our desktop computer, and since my husband is adamantly against computers in the bedroom (not very sexy right?) we ventured out to IKEA to find the perfect desk.

We found a sleek and thin beauty perfect for a small space. We ordered it in gray, but when we got home turned out to be black - a happy mistake because the finish of the desk reminds me of our beautiful piano.

Now where to put it? Everyone wants a corner office right? So I had a choice, either I block the view and take up window space, or I use this beautiful pillar as an anchor.
This small IKEA desk fits perfectly in the corner, making great use of an otherwise tricky spot because of the pillar. The ghost chair is gorgeous at this desk! Pin It

The ghost chair is such an elegant touch (I'm not too fond of traditional desk chairs) and it doesn't take away from the light provided by the floor to ceiling windows. I added the round cushion for a pop of color.

It would be a sin to block this river view

Since this mini office has to be in the middle of my living room, I wanted to make sure it always looks nice.
Small spaces - A living room, office and breakfast nook all in one area

I added a few details with accessories - a feminine bouquet and the more modern clock and ampersand to balance things out.
Little details on a desk make the space more personal and less stuffy. I just love how reflective the finish of the desk is, bringing the outside view in!

And storage for a small office is an absolute MUST - the drawers are huge and keep all of the mess hidden.
Pretty on the outside, messy on the inside!

So there you have it, my little office in the sky! Do you have similar space challenges in your home?
